Beauty // New Mama Makeup Routine

Happy Friday everyone!
I currently have a list of posts I'm working on but just haven't had a chance to finish yet, as I still have pretty limited computer time these days. I'm hoping to get a lot of those posts up in March, but I thought I'd end this month with a post about one of my favorite topics to talk about - makeup!

Now that I'm a mom (which is still super weird to say...) I definitely don't wear makeup every single day. However, I am still a total beauty junkie and I really appreciate how taking the time to put on makeup helps me feel more pulled together on the days that I do wear it. And as a new mom, my priorities when it comes to makeup have changed somewhat. Before, I liked to play around with a lot of different products and tended to experiment more with how I did my makeup from day to day. But now, my time is a much more limited commodity and so I find that having a consistent, foolproof routine is what works best for me. It's extremely crucial that I only use products that do their job well and are easy to apply. And because diapers don't grow on trees, cost is also a bigger factor these days when it comes to my makeup routine. I definitely try to seek out those gems from the drugstore that really offer a lot of bang for your buck, and if I am going to splurge on a more high-end product, I want to make sure that it's actually worth it and not a waste of my money.

So after narrowing down my makeup collection, these are my go-to products, as well as my current routine to create a natural yet still polished look that works for me...

I start my makeup with either my Nars tinted moisturizer (I'm in the shade Alaska) or this Cover Girl 'Ready, Set, Gorgeous' foundation (in shade 115), depending on the level of coverage I'm looking for. The tinted moisturizer is more natural while still providing a good base, whereas the foundation is definitely more full-coverage. (Sometimes I'll actually combine the two to get the best of both worlds!) Also, I'm not typically a big fan of Cover Girl products but I heard on one of the beauty You Tube channels I watch that this particular one was really good for oily skin, and it's turned out to be one of the better drugstore foundations I've tried! Both the tinted moisturizer and the foundation can be applied with a brush, but they go on equally well with your fingers, which is super helpful when I only have a quick minute to spare.

After applying my base, the next step is under eye concealer...definitely a key step in a new mama's makeup routine! The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser for Dark Circles (I use the shade 'Fair) is definitely my new ride or die concealer. It does a great job of covering dark circles and helping you look more awake, and so even if I'm not really doing a full face of makeup, I'll often still swipe this on under my eyes. I'll also usually tap a little on my eyelids as well to even out any veins/redness.

Once I've applied concealer, I'll go ahead and set my makeup with powder. I'm currently using Maybelline's Fit Me Matte & Poreless powder (in shade Buff Beige) and it works pretty well, given the price. However, I'm definitely not sold on it so any powder recommendations would be totally welcome!

After I've applied powder, I'll go ahead and get out my Nars Blush/Bronzer palette. (I don't have the exact palette pictured, but mine is very similar) I'll typically take some of the Nars Laguna Bronzer on a fluffy eye shadow blending brush (I use a Sigma E40) and just swipe some of that in the crease of my eye. It really helps save time using bronzer as eye shadow, and I like how the color helps to make my eyes stand out but still looks very natural. After that, I'll take some of the Laguna brozner and on a larger bronzer brush and apply it to slightly contour my cheeks as well as on my forehead/temples. Then I'll apply one of my blushes from the Nars Palette to the apples of my cheeks and I feel that it goes a long way in perking up my face when I'm looking tired.

After I'm through with the Nars palette, I'll apply mascara (Maybelline's The Rocket in Blackest Black is still my go-to!) but I don't typically have time for eye shadow (beyond putting a little bronzer in my crease) and I rarely wear eyeliner. And last but not least is my favorite product, eyebrow gel! I have pretty dark brows that can be kind of unruly and the clear brow gel from Anastasia is totally worth the splurge IMO as it's better than anything I've tried. I feel like having tidy brows makes such a difference in how you look, so even if I'm not going to apply makeup, I'll usually at least put on eyebrow gel!

Finally, I like having a good lip color because that really helps pull everything together. Plus, it's typically the other product I'll wear even if I'm not going to put on makeup that day. I really like lip products that are very moisturizing, offer some color, but are still sheer enough that I can apply them without a mirror. Almay has a new Butter Kiss Lipstick out that I'm loving (in the shade Light - Pink) and then I really like the Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter (in Pink Truffle) as well.

This is not a sponsored post, these are just the things that I'm really loving at the moment when it comes to my current quick and easy makeup routine! However, I'm still always on the hunt for new products and love trying out the latest and greatest when it comes to beauty. Plus I do tend to change things up with the change in seasons, and so I'll most likely be doing some updated posts again down the road as I incorporate new products. But for now, this is what's working for me!

Oregon // Henry's First Visit to the Coast

I'm sure that all my friends and family back in Michigan are getting really sick of me talking about this but...the winter in Oregon this year has been AMAZING! We have had so many sunny and 50+ degree days, and I have been absolutely loving it. I honestly attribute a big part of the confidence I have with the baby at this point to the fact that the weather here has been so nice. Because we've been able to get out of the house a lot, it's allowed me to get really comfortable with taking Henry places, plus regular fresh air and sunshine have done such wonders for my mental state. I seriously couldn't have asked for a better winter to have a new baby!

Last weekend, we had some gorgeous weather and so we decided to take Henry on his first trip to the Oregon Coast! This wasn't actually his first time at the ocean since we did go to San Diego earlier this month (post coming soon!) but it was his first visit to the beach here in his home state, which is still pretty special. Being from Michigan, this whole concept of going to the beach in the winter is still pretty novel to me, but I absolutely love it! (You may remember we had a similarly sunny beach day last winter, but the thrill still hasn't worn off yet) We went to Cannon Beach...along with a million other people, thanks to the nice weather. But despite the crowds, we still had a fantastic day - we walked on the sand, ate saltwater taffy, had a delicious meal outside at the Wayfarer, and caught a beautiful sunset before driving the 90 minutes home to Portland. Here's a glimpse of our day...

I had Henry in my Modern Wrap pretty much all day and it was perfect for the beach. Definitely easier than dealing with a stroller on the sand! Be sure to check out the end of this post for more info and a discount code :)
Trying to get a picture with Lola...ha :)
Handsome boys at lunch :)
He looks a little unsure about his hat...but I just love it!
Haystack Rock!
Still working on selfies as a party of 3...practice makes perfect :)

I'm so thankful that we live so close to the ocean!
Looking forward to lots more trips here with our little guy :)

Last but not least, the lovely folks at Modern Wrap are featuring me as their "Mother of the Week" this week! Feel free to check out their Instagram (@modernwrap) where they'll be sharing some of my thoughts on motherhood. They were also sweet enough to provide me with a discount code to share with all of you! Just enter 'JANE15' at checkout for 15% off your first purchase - I'm a big fan of baby wearing and I absolutely love their wrap :)

Style // The Oscars Best Dressed

So this whole "getting back to blogging" thing is going a little slower than I hoped, huh?

I literally have a list of 20+ different posts that I want to write, but finding the time to sit down at a computer to actually write them is another story. I know we'll get into more of a schedule eventually, but for now, I'm just really enjoying every second with my sweet little Henry :)

This weekend was pretty low-key but nice; went to the Farmer's Market, went out with the girls for drinks and fro-yo to celebrate a friend's birthday, went to church, went for a walk with a friend, and enjoyed all the sunshine we had here in Portland. And of course, we watched the Oscars last night!

I love keeping up with red carpet fashion during awards season and the Oscars is definitely the most important night of them all. I actually really enjoyed last night's show and thought NPH did a great job hosting. And how awesome was that Lady Gaga Sound of Music tribute? I don't think anyone (myself included) quite realized what an amazing voice she has! I feel like she seems like she's trying to change direction with her image and so last night was definitely a huge moment that has her back on everyone's radar now. And then when Julie Andrews came out it just made it that much more amazing. The Sound of Music is one of my all-time favorite movies and I can't believe it's 50 years old! (Sidenote - fellow SOM lovers will enjoy this article) Overall I thought it was a great show. As for the red carpet? Overall, everyone seemed like they were sort of playing it safe, but there were definitely a few dresses that stood out to me. Here are my favorites from last night's festivities:

Reese Witherspoon in Tom Ford
She's one of my all-time favorites and this dress looked so classic and elegant on her.

Jennifer Lopez in Elie Saab
JLo has been straight up killing it this awards season and this dress was no exception!

Emma Stone in Elie Saab
I love her style and thought this color looked so stunning on her!

Gwyneth Paltrow in Ralph & Russo
Although I didn't love her earrings/makeup, I thought this dress was perfection on her.

Rosamund Pike in Givenchy
This dress was gorgeous and was definitely a standout with all the light-colored gowns last night.

Julianne Moore in Chanel
I thought this dress was so beautiful and extremely fitting for a Best Actress winner!

Jennifer Aniston in Versace
So I thought this was a little boring on her, but she seriously looks amazing and the dress is beautiful.

Felicity Jones in Alexander McQueen
At first, I was a little unsure how I felt about this one, but I actually really love it because it's different!

Cate Blanchett in John Galiano
This was an understated look that I thought was perfect for being a presenter,  plus I love that necklace. Black and turquoise is one of my favorite color combos, it just looks so sharp!

Henry // Newborn Photos

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a fantastic Valentine's Day :) It was extra special for me this year because I had two handsome Valentine's to share it with, plus the weather here in Oregon was pretty amazing. (Not to rub it in to all of you freezing right now in the Midwest/East Coast!)

Last week on Instagram, I posted one of the photos from Henry's newborn shoot that we had done just after he was born. Today, I finally wanted to go ahead and share the photos with you!

Before Henry was born, I knew I wanted to have professional newborn photos taken. However, I was kind of torn on whether I wanted photos that were more focused solely on the baby with cute props and all that or if I wanted more of a lifestyle shoot that incorporated the whole family. Through my participation with Portland Bloggers, I came across the work of Aubrie LeGault and made the decision I wanted her to do a shoot at our house. A big part of what really sold me on her work was the fact that she had incorporated dogs in a lot of her newborn shoots and I just loved that idea.

I had Aubrie come and take these photos the week after Henry was born and I had every intention of sharing them here on the blog right away, along with getting our birth announcements ordered ASAP. That didn't end up happening because those first few weeks with a newborn are kind of a blur. It's crazy to me to see how much Henry has already changed from when these photos were taken to now, and it makes me so glad we got them done! (And I have a post coming soon about our birth announcements so stayed tuned for that!)

I have seen some other newborn photos where the baby is wide awake and looking right at the camera or they're peacefully asleep and posed just perfectly and those are really adorable. But that didn't quite happen for us; Henry was actually very fussy on the day we had these photos taken, which I now realize probably due to the fact that he was hungry since he wasn't nursing properly due to his tongue tie. (Plus, I have to remind myself that most of the time those photos of wide-eyed babies are taken when they're a few weeks older than he was.) But what I love about these photos Aubrie took of us is that they captured not just our sleepy-eyed, brand-new newborn, but our newborn family. Henry's birth was also the birth of Cameron and I in our new roles as parents (and Lola as a big sister of course!) and I'm so thankful that we have the start of this new chapter of our lives so beautifully documented in a relaxed way in our home. So without further ado, prepare for photo overload...

Love that she got some photos in his nursery!

And because he was a December baby, I couldn't resist getting some shots by the tree!

Best early Christmas gift ever :)
Thanks again to Aubrie for the beautiful photos!
