Exploring Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Virginia City

This weekend, Cam's parents were in town from Oregon and it was so nice to have our first visitors! We had a great time exploring our new home state with them, and I wanted to share some of my photos!

Saturday we decided to do the drive around Lake Tahoe, which is about 72 miles and touted as one of the most beautiful drives in the West. We had a perfect sunny day, and I was so excited to take some pictures of the lake when we stopped at Emerald Bay (a gorgeous part of the lake!)...except when I pulled out the camera I realized that I forgot to put the memory card back in after downloading the pictures on the computer. Major bummer. Luckily my cell phone takes pretty good pictures though, so that's what I had to use for the rest of the day.

The lake is so beautiful, and I'm looking forward to doing this drive many more times! (and hopefully being able to take some pictures with my real camera...) During our drive around the lake, we also passed by Squaw Valley, one of Tahoe's big ski resorts and home of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

We drove up to Truckee, California, a cute little town just northwest of the lake, for lunch and I really liked it. There were lots of cute shops and restaurants, and I have a feeling we'll be going back again soon.

We had lunch at a cute little French-style place called avec that had fantastic sandwiches!
Downtown Truckee
So pretty with the mountains in the background!

There are so many adorable communities all around the lake, and I loved seeing all the unique homes during Saturday's drive. Even though it takes a little bit of time, driving around the lake is definitely something I'd recommend doing if you visit Tahoe!

Sunday, we drove away from the lake to see some of Nevada. Our first stop was a little town called Genoa, which sits near the base of the mountains. It's a very small town, but it has this really neat saloon that claims to be Nevada's oldest bar!

How crazy is this place?!

Next, we drove up to Virginia City, NV, which is a historic mining town that makes you feel like you stepped back in time. Granted the town is touristy, however, what I liked is that despite the t-shirt shops and old-time photo places the town and the people we saw walking around feel authentic. Lots of places try to make their towns have an "old-West" feel that seems contrived, Virginia City is the real deal. There are so many neat little saloons and casinos that look like they're straight out of the 1800's. Definitely worth a day trip if you're in Lake Tahoe and have some extra time!

The town had some gorgeous views

Cam and his parents
Mark Twain sent some time in Virginia City so he now has his own museum in town
This saloon had a great Western band

Silver was mined in Virgina City and it was really interesting to see all the old silver dollars
I loved all the old-fashioned lights

There were lots of people walking around dressed like this

We also had some great meals while my in-laws were in town, but in order to not look like a crazy person in front of them, I resisted whipping out my DSLR at most of the restaurants we went to. But if you do come to Stateline/South Lake Tahoe, here are a few places we tried this weekend that I liked:

Sugar Pine Bakery for cinnamon rolls and other baked treats
Chart House for happy hour and great views of the lake at sunset
Mirabelle for french food--they make an awesome souffle!
We went two places Cam and I had already tried--Red Hut Cafe for breakfast (and the most buttery hashbrowns you've ever tasted) and The Swiss Chalet, which is great if you like Swiss food/fondue
Evan's American Gourmet Cafe--seriously, this place was SO good. Often you'll go to a restaurant and the presentation will be awesome but the food will be just ok or vice versa,  but this place has both. All the food we had was complex and flavorful, and artfully presented on the plate, and their dessert menu was amazing. It's very small inside though, so I'd definitely recommend reservations.

I did managed to snap one picture with my cell phone of my frozen white chocolate mousse torte at Evan's because it just looked so lovely!

Hope you're having a wonderful week so far everyone! Don't forget to enter my Shabby Apple necklace giveaway, winner will be announced Friday! Xoxo

Awards Season, pt. 2 + A Must-See Movie!

Happy Monday everyone, how was your weekend?

I originally had a different post intended for today, but my weekend ended up being busier than I anticipated...which is definitely not a bad thing! I'll have that post for you later in the week, but for now I want to talk awards season fashion!

As I mentioned before, I absolutely love this time of year because I think it's so much fun to see all my favorite celebs dressed in gorgeous gowns for all these awards shows. It makes it feel like there is still a little bit of old Hollywood glamour left and not just the trashy tabloid wasteland that we see the rest of the year. The SAG Awards were on TV last night and while I didn't get to watch them, I got a chance to look at all the photos of what everyone wore (which is really all I care about anyway!). I realize that sometimes a dress can look different in one picture than when you actually see it on screen, but based on the photos, here are my favorite looks:

Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen
Julie Bowen in Temperly London
Stacy Keibler in Marchesa
Emily Blunt in Oscar de la Renta
Sofia Vergara in Marchesa
Michelle Williams in Valentino
And speaking of awards season, the reason I wasn't able to watch the SAG awards last night is because I was out at the movie theater watching this:

I went to see it with my husband and my in-laws (who are visiting from Oregon right now!) and it was SO good. I was a little hesitant to go see this movie because I had heard that it was a tear-jerker, and I'm not always a fan of sad/heavy movies, even though it's rare that I actually cry during a film. I ended up bawling through a good 1/3 of this movie, but would still very highly recommend it because it's such a beautiful example of how a film can make you feel such intense emotions. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close embodies the ups and downs of the human experience, and I thought every aspect of the movie was very well-done. (I cannot believe that the kid, Thomas Horn, who played the main character is not nominated for an Oscar because he did an amazing job) The film is nominated for the Oscar for best picture, so if you're like me and you like to try to see some of the nominated movies before the Academy Awards, this is a must-see.

Have a fantastic Monday friends, and don't forget to enter my giveaway to win this beautiful necklace from Shabby Apple! Xoxo

Happy 2nd Birthday, Blog!

In the Pink and Green turns two today!

Via
I so wish we could all celebrate with a slice of cake, how much fun would that be?

I just wanted to take a moment and express my sincerest thanks to everyone that takes time out of their day to read this blog. When I started it back in January of 2010, I was in my first year of marriage, living in Ann Arbor, and had some extra time on my hands so I thought "why not start a blog?" The past two years have brought more change and growth than I could have ever anticipated, and I've so enjoyed having an outlet to share those experiences. I love the way this blog allows me to stay in touch with my family and friends across the country, and then it's been such an unexpected blessing to discover this incredibly vibrant community of bloggers who have become friends over the past two years as well. I've so enjoyed sharing my journey with all of you and I'm excited about the year to come.

So in honor of my little blog's second birthday, I've got two things to share:

1. The Recipes tab is finally updated! I've reorganized the recipes a bit so it's easier to find things by category now, and I'll try to keep that page more current in the future.

2. I'm giving away this gorgeous necklace from Shabby Apple!
You can find out all the details about how to enter here, winner will be announced Friday! Xoxo

Our New Home + My 1st Giveaway!

TGIF!

After almost a month in Tahoe, I'm figured it's high time to share some photos of the new digs! Here we go...

Our little cabin in the woods, this place is much different than our previous three places because it's an apartment within a house instead of being in a traditional complex.

The house is set up high in the mountains and it's surrounded by trees, so it's extremely quiet and peaceful.

We live in the lower apartment, so you have to go down a set of stairs to get to our front door...also the house is a really funky lavender color.

Picnic table (which was a little wet from the melting snow yesterday) on our deck, which has a great view of the mountains...let's go inside, shall we?

Honey, I'm home...this is what you see upon walking in the front door.

View of the family room, the gas stove is the apartment's primary heat source.

Mantle

View of the other side of the family room

We found these pine cones in our backyard, they're giant!

View of the family room from the kitchen...unfortunately, I didn't get to take most of these photos until after it was dark, but that large picture window is the best part of the apartment...it brings in lots of light and has a great view of the mountains. I also like the beam on the family room ceiling because it gives it a cozy, cabin-type feel.

Shot of my desk from earlier in the day, I love looking out the window at the mountains all day while I'm working.

Pantry cabinet that we got on our trek to Ikea a few weeks ago

 Our kitchen

Pots and pans...racks also from Ikea!

These also a nice view out the kitchen window...when it's light out that is!

Hallway...first door on the right is our second bedroom (which is currently serving as a glorified closet/storage room), second door on the right is our bedroom, the door on the left is our bathroom, and the door straight ahead goes to our washer and dryer.

Our bedroom--lots of wood paneling! Also, I'm feel like it's kind of dorky to hang our diplomas over our dresser, but in this apartment we really didn't have anywhere else to hang them and I didn't want to just stuff them away in a closet!

I love our new duvet covet...which we also found at Ikea!

Other side of the bedroom--more wood paneling!

Our bathroom

This place is definitely much different (and smaller) than our previous apartments. If we owned the house there are definitely bigger changes I'd make (aka taking down the wood paneling and 1970s ceiling fan!) but since we're just renting, we just have to make the best of it. However, now that we're all unpacked, organized, and have things hanging on the walls it feels much more like home. I'm liking it much more than I thought I would when we first got here, and overall I'm happy with how it came together. It's very cute, cozy, and peaceful...our very own little cabin in the woods! I love looking out the window at the mountains and I also love seeing the bright stars at night when I take Lola outside. My other favorite part of living in this house?

Definitely the amazing sunsets.

Almost makes up for the fact that I live over 90 minutes from a mall.

That's what online shopping is for fool.
Thanks Lola, I don't know what I'd do without your infinite wisdom.

Anyway, on to the next order of business...I'm so excited to announce that I'm doing my first ever giveaway today!

When the lovely people from Shabby Apple contacted me to see if I'd be interested in giving away one of their beautiful pieces of jewelry I jumped at the chance.
