Halloweekend + Honeycrisp Apple Sangria

How is it already November?!

That's craziness.

I totally meant to keep going with my Wanderlust Wednesday posts yesterday and was planning to post about what we plan to see and do in Israel...but I ran out of time. And since we leave for our trip in 11 days (whattttttt) I'm a little bit busy right now doing some last minute planning, but I'll definitely be sharing all about it when we get back!

Anyway, before October gets too far in the rearview, how was everyone's Halloween? We didn't do anything too crazy this year, and didn't dress up...maybe next year! We did end up getting together with our neighbors to carve pumpkins though, and that was a lot of fun!

{Carving pumpkins on our deck}
{Our finished product...mine's the little one that looked like a 5 year old carved it...I went for something a little more simple than last year's design...Cam once again carved a scary face!}

 In honor of our little pumpkin carving get-together, I wanted to try out a recipe I've had on my Pinterest board all fall--Honeycrisp Apple Sangria! I love sangria in the summer so the idea of putting a fall twist on it really appealed to me. Ever since I saw this pretty photo, I knew I had to give it a try.

 Honeycrisp Apple Sangria
Recipe Source: Nutmeg Nanny

Ingredients:
2 honeycrisp apples
One 750-milliliter bottle un-oaked Chardonnay
1/2 cup peach schnapps
1/4 cup orange blossom honey
2 oranges- 1 quartered
1 lemon - quartered
1 lime - quartered
2 cinnamon sticks
2 quarter-size slices of fresh ginger
3 whole cloves
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Ice
Club soda

Directions:
Peel, core and chop one of the apples. In a bowl, combine the Chardonnay, schnapps and honey. Add the quartered orange, lemon, lime, cinnamon sticks, chopped apple, ginger and cloves and refrigerate overnight. (If you don't want to wait that long at least give it 4 hours)
Strain the sangria into a pitcher. Peel, core and finely chop the remaining apple. Peel, section and chop the remaining orange. Mix the apple and orange in a bowl.
On a small plate, blend the sugar and cinnamon. Moisten the rims of wine glasses and dip in the cinnamon sugar to coat. Fill the glasses with ice. Pour in the sangria until three-quarters full. Top with a splash of club soda. Garnish with a spoonful of the chopped apple and orange.

*********

Unfortunately, I didn't decide until Saturday afternoon that I wanted to make this sangria for Saturday night, when really it's supposed to sit overnight. Whoops. After rushing to the store and buying the ingredients, mind ended up sitting in the fridge for about 4 hours.

 I also decided to make a double batch, which ended up making a good choice because even doing that I still only got about 6 glasses of it. As for the finished product, I thought it was really good! The peach flavor from the schnapps was a little overpowering, but you definitely got a lot of the flavors from the fruit and the cinnamon as well. I think that the flavors might have been stronger had I let it sit overnight, but ahh well! Unfortunately I didn't really get any good pictures of the finished product because 1) it was night and the light in our kitchen is terrible 2) we were in the middle of pumpkin carving 3) our neighbors were over and everyone was waiting for me to serve the sangria so I didn't exactly have time to do a photo shoot! But this gives you an idea of how it turned out...

{My cinnamon sugar rims didn't come out very pretty...but they still tasted good}

It was a fun drink to celebrate fall, and it tasted great with these cupcakes

And last but not least, I thought I'd share a few photos of Lola from the weekend. We didn't end up getting a new costume for her this year, but when we were doing some cleaning Sunday we came across a little fall wreath and decided to have a little fun...

"WTF"
"Seriously people, take this off me"
"I hate you guys so much"
Fierce.
I like how she really decided to own it at the end...ha.

Well that's all for me today, I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween!

{My sister and I on Halloween back in the day...good times!}
 It's now socially acceptable to start listening to Christmas music.

Just FYI.

Have a great Thursday! Xoxo

PS: I'm linking this post up with Katie and Steph for their *Saw It. Pinned It. Did It* Link Up! Definitely go check it out, it's so much fun to see all these ideas from Pinterest come to life!
