Return to working out...

See how hard it is to resist this face?
So I have a confession to make--tonight was the first time I've worked out in a loooooong time. I've basically been on a hiatus from the gym since we started fostering Lola back in mid-December. Then it was Christmas and I the extent of my exercise was lifting sugar cookies...into my mouth. Then we came home and I've basically used having a new puppy as my excuse for why I haven't been working out. And it's not that I don't like working out, because I do, I love it actually. Being active has always been a part of my life, and I really enjoy going to the different classes that they offer at my gym. I used to either go during my lunch hour, straight from work before I went home, or, if I was feeling really ambitious, before work in the morning. But now that we have Lola, it makes getting to the gym a little more difficult. Since my work is closer to our apartment, I'm usually the one that comes home at lunch to walk her and take her out. Then after work, I have to come home and let her out before I go to the gym. Which means that once I get home, I'm home for the night because she's just so darn adorable that I feel bad leaving to go back out to the gym. And getting up to go to workout in the morning? Well since she came into our lives, that just hasn't happened.

However, I'm starting to realize that even though there may be changes in my life, it's really important that my priorities stay constant. Being active is important to me, and especially given the fact that I work in a job where I sit all day, when I'm not working out, I just don't feel as healthy or have as much energy. Granted, now that we have Lola, I may have to readjust my expectations, meaning maybe workout 3 times a week instead of 5 or 6 times. But that's ok, it's better than nothing. It's just important that I commit to doing something, and get back on track. Because honestly if I can't get to the gym when I have a puppy, how much harder is it going to be to stay in shape when I have kids one day? That thought is what made me get my butt in the car and go to spin class tonight! Because as I get older and my time gets more scarce, I know that I have to make taking care of myself a priority and stay active, even when other things like work or a cute puppy monopolize my time.

One thing I am looking forward to as Lola gets bigger is getting to go one walks, hikes, and runs with her. Cam and I actually took Lola on her first hike yesterday in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina, and she did great! It was a 6.5 mile hike, and she got a little bit tired at the end, but she made it the whole way. (I've included some pics from our hike!) I'm looking forward to spending more time outdoors with her as the weather warms up, so that way I can stay fit and spend time with my pup all at once! :)

We stopped at the overlook at Caesar's Head on our way to NC

A few of my favorite (Christmas) things...

Now that I'm back in to the swing of work and everyday life, Christmas seems like somewhat of a distant memory. However, there are a few presents I got that I'm using on a regular basis/obsessed with, so I felt the need to share:
  • Fresh Sugar Rosé Lip Treatment: Love this stuff! Every time that I've been to Sephora in the past year (which apparently was many times because I just received VIB status at the end of 2010...oy vey) I've wanted to buy this lip balm, however, even with as many frivolous beauty purchases as I make, I had a very hard time justifying to myself spending $23 on lip balm. However, I was fortunate enough to receive it in my stocking, and it's as awesome as I had hoped. It's super moisturizing, gives the perfect hint of natural color, and it smells like a fabulous Ina Garten dessert aka sweet with a hint of lemon--perfect.

  • Joby Gorilla Pod: We used this handy little tripod all the time on our Europe trip, but somewhere between Italy and Switzerland, we lost the piece that screws into the bottom of the camera. Thankfully Cam's parents got me a new one for Christmas (pink of course!) and I've already used it a bunch of times taking pictures of the dog. It's so easy to throw in a purse or take on a hike, and it wraps around anything to give you the perfect photo.
  • Kindle: My parents got me one of the new 3rd generation Kindles for Christmas and obsessed is an understatement. I love this thing. I'll admit, I was initially against the idea of getting a Kindle because I love books-everything from going to bookstores, to the covers, to smell and feel of turning the pages (ok, that sounds a little weirdly obsessive, but I really do love books!). However, since we travel a lot, I started to see the value in being able to bring a lot of books with me in my carry-on without all the weight. The Kindle is awesome because it's so light that I can just throw it in my purse and take it with me everywhere, and I got the model that has both 3G and Wifi, which is really handy for downloading books on the go. I also downloaded a Scrabble game, which has been super addicting, and I also got a really cute pink case as sort of late Christmas present to myself. Kindle = LOVE.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Today is my sweet momma's birthday (I won't say how old she is haha), and it was great because I was able to celebrate with her and the rest of my family because they've been in town for the past few days. My parents and my sister flew in on Saturday, and then I just took them back to the airport a few hours ago. I was glad that Melissa was able to finally come down and see South Carolina, and I was happy that they could all see Lola while she's still small. On Saturday, we walked around Greenville in the snow and sunshine, and then Sunday we went to Asheville, NC and they got to see the Biltmore. Last night, Cam and I cooked dinner, and we celebrated my mom's birthday (a day early) and watched old movies from when Meliss and I were little (this was actually so much fun!). Today, I had lunch with the fam before I dropped them off at the airport. It was a fast few days, but I'm thankful for any time that we can all spend together making new memories :)

Goodbye Betsy

Today, my parents had to go put our family dog, Betsy, to sleep after 16 years. She was a great little beagle and the best dog ever. We got her when I was in third grade, she was a wonderful part of our family.  She was always happy, and had a long life bringing a lot of joy to everyone she met. She held on through the holidays and it was really great to see her one last time when I was home in Michigan. So while I'm sad that she's gone (and I don't think it will really hit me until I go home next time), I am glad that she is at peace and no longer suffering. She was a big part of my childhood, and I feel like her death is like the closing of a chapter for everyone in my family. She was a special little dog and we're all going to miss her.

Celebrating 1/11/11 with...a snow day?

Happy New Year! We made it back to South Carolina after all our holiday travels, and have just been getting back in the swing of things as new dog owners. We picked up little Lola after we got back last week, and we couldn't believe how much she had grown from the the tiny little thing she was when we first got her. A wonderful family had watched us for her while we were gone, and they wrote us a really sweet letter about how awesome she is, so that was a great surprise to come home to. She is so much fun, and I'm so excited to finally have a dog! (Seriously, I think I've been asking Cam to get me a dog since our first joke) We're still working on the whole concept of not going to the bathroom in the apartment, but other than that, everything is going great...

However, we are currently snowed in. I know, seriously? I didn't think this was possible in South Carolina, but I'm currently looking out my window at a winter wonderland. When I woke up yesterday morning, I thought I was in Michigan! We got about 8 inches of snow late Sunday night/Monday morning, so Cam and I both got to work from home yesterday, as everything was basically shut down because they don't have the equipment to clear the roads. In Michigan, getting 8 inches of snow would be a lot, but it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but this is like a blizzard of epic proportions down here. (I'm told that the last time they got this much snow was back in the 80s, crazy!) So it was fun yesterday playing in the snow, but then last night we got freezing rain which created a layer of ice over all the snow, so we're working from home again today, because the roads are still really terrible. What usually happens when it snows down here is that it warms up right away so it doesn't stick, but it's been really cold so far this week and is supposed to remain below freezing for the next few days...

It's been hysterical watching the news because they're basically covering this snow storm with the same sense of urgency and importance as a national tragedy. To give you an idea, this morning one of the reporters actually explained what an ice scraper was, as if it was some mythical foreign joke. Since this storm had been predicted a few days in advance, I went out Saturday to stock up on groceries, and what everyone had warned me would happen came true--the grocery store was a madhouse! There were more people in Whole Foods than I've ever seen, it was insane. A friend of mine took a picture of the bread aisle at a grocery store in Greenville on Sunday and it was COMPLETELY bare, people just go nuts when they think it's going to snow. I don't know why people always stock up on milk and bread if it's going to snow, if I'm going to be stuck in my house, I want to have candy! I did stock up on baking supplies, and so far have made a batch of brownies, a batch of oatmeal butterscotch cookies, and Cam made homemade mayonnaise. (We need to get back to work before we make any more completely unnecessary food!) I've done some reading, played with the puppy, and basically just laid around in our PJs. So while I haven't had a snow day to enjoy in years (because U of M/employers in Michigan don't give them!), and I certainly wasn't expecting it to happen in SC, I'll take it! I'm guessing we'll have to be back at work tomorrow, but for now I'm enjoying this little break ! :)
Lola wasn't quite sure what to make of the snow...

My jeeper on the other hand is used to being covered in snow!

Going to play...

At first she liked it...
